Dear parents and carers,
With the World Cup football tournament underway and running through much of the summer term, I wanted to take a moment to write. This event generates genuine excitement among many of our pupils, and we wanted to update you on how we plan to make the most of it in school.
We appreciate that not every family follows football, and this letter is not simply about the sport. What makes this tournament particularly interesting from a school perspective is its scale: with 48 nations taking part, there are likely to be teams representing countries that matter personally to many of our pupils and families. We see this as a genuine opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity within our community and help all pupils feel a sense of belonging and pride, whether or not they follow the football closely.
We also know from national evidence that young people’s physical and mental wellbeing is under real pressure. Engagement in sport and physical activity makes a meaningful difference, and we will be using the World Cup as a prompt to encourage pupils to be active and to reflect on what staying physically healthy can do for their overall happiness. Football is the backdrop, but the message applies to every pupil regardless of their relationship with the game.
Most matches take place in the evenings or overnight. We plan to create spaces where pupils can come in and talk about what they have watched, celebrate results, and connect with others who share their enthusiasm. Our experience tells us that when pupils have something at school to look forward to, it supports their attendance and motivation rather than working against it.
We will host assemblies that reflect on the impact of the World Cup and what we can learn from such events, as well as creating opportunities for children to discuss through PSHE. We believe this will help build a sense of excitement and belonging across our school community while complementing pupils’ learning.
We hope your family enjoys the tournament, whatever your level of interest in football.
Yours sincerely,

Mr Gareth Nation
Principal
