Dear Parents and Carers of Year 6 pupils
I hope this letter finds you well. As we approach the final term of the academic year, I would like to take a moment to address an increasingly important topic that affects the wellbeing of our children—the safe and responsible use of social media.
At Minerva Primary School, we are committed to supporting our pupils in becoming respectful, responsible, and safe digital citizens. As our Year 6 children prepare for the transition to secondary school, many are becoming more curious and engaged with online platforms. While the internet offers many educational and social benefits, it also presents risks that we must all work together to manage.
One particular concern is the use of Snapchat, a popular social media app. Please be aware that Snapchat is rated 13+, meaning it is not legally intended for use by children under the age of 13. Despite this, we are aware that some of our pupils may be accessing the platform. This raises concerns around exposure to inappropriate content, online bullying, and the sharing of personal information.
We strongly encourage you to:
We will continue to educate our pupils about online safety through our School Values (Courage, Collaboration, Compassion and Excellence), the curriculum and assemblies, but your support at home is vital in reinforcing these messages. Mrs Caldecott and Mrs Elsley will run additional sessions for the children to ensure the message is clear and understood.
If you have any concerns or would like further guidance on how to support your child’s digital wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact us. Together, we can help ensure that our children enjoy the benefits of the digital world while staying safe and secure.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mr G Nation
